Debut 1972 (Glasgow, en del av hertigen i Bizets Belle of Perth). Han uppträdde på Wexford-festivalen 1973 (Sobinins roll i A Life for the Tsar). Från 1979 sjöng han ett antal år på Covent Garden (delar av Duke, Rudolph, Pinkerton, Edgar i Lucia di Lammermoor, Macduff i Verdis Macbeth, etc.). Han uppträdde på English National Opera. 1987 gjorde han sin debut på Metropolitan Opera (Rudolf). 1989 gjorde han rollen som Faust i Boitos Mephistopheles i San Francisco. 1994 sjöng han delen av Othello i Covent Garden, 1995 delen av Radames i München, 1997 delen av Calaf i Hamburg. Inspelningar inkluderar delen av Faust i Mephistopheles (LD, dir. Arena, Pioneer).
